OVER-THE-PHONE SQUIGGLES
I have no earthly idea why,
but somehow I seem to be a better listener on the telephone if I have a pencil
in hand. Not in my ear, don’t get me wrong - in my hand. Heaven knows
why. Then, should the conversation over the phone last long enough, I can’t
help myself : I just have to keep that hand busy, otherwise it gets bored. Just
so that it’ll leave me alone… And so I let it draw.
When I hang up, I’m always stunned by the results. I don’t know
who takes over and draws squiggles with my hand while I’m on the phone.
One thing’s for sure. It just isn’t me ! Or at the very least not
the usual me, the one I spend most of my conscious life with. I often feel that
whoever draws while I’m busy talking seizes the moments when I’m
otherwise engaged, and does whatever I prevent it from doing as soon as I hang
up again.
To cut a long story short, I kept a stack of these curious drawings, including
the few samples you can see below. I shan’t fail to renew them regularly.
You see, I spend an awful lot of time on the phone.
